                                     =====================

Myrtle Beach Bike Week® will be 69 Years Young in 2009
Everyone is Welcome to the Celebration

The promoters, the businesses, everyone working together we bring much needed and welcome business to the Grand Strand, Horry County, surrounding counties and states.

Myrtle Beach Bike Week® (or Harley Week as some call this event) May 8-17, 2009 is promoted by a few promoters and several different corporations and business.   Myrtle Beach Bike Week® is a ten (10) day event.  This event attracts people from all walks of life and from all over the world to one central location we call “The Grand Strand”.   Many who attend Bike Week own condos or times shares and they bought them just for this time of year and because of this event.   Others attending, rent homes or condos for the week, while others rent motel / hotel rooms for a shorter period of time.

This event is also a business.  From around the world goods are manufactured by factories and shipped to the Grand Strand.  The products will be sold by the existing businesses and by vendors whom follow the rallies throughout the country.  Yes, the business this event generates can be felt around the world and especially in the surrounding states of SC.   From where you live to “The Grand Strand” you purchase fuel, eat at restaurants, stop at attractions or spend the night somewhere on the way and mostly the same when you return home.

All motorcycles and all motorcycle enthusiasts are welcome at Myrtle Beach Bike Week® and it has always been this way.   Daytona Beach and other rallies around the country are no different.  They welcome everyone from around the world to attend their events.

The # 1 complaint for the month of May from what I have read and the public posting, is The City of Myrtle Beach, the residence; the businesses prefer to have No Bike Events on Memorial Day Weekend.   The City wants to bring back Memorial Day Weekend as a family vacation weekend to start the summer vacation season.   To accomplish this, the City of Atlantic Beach would have to move the dates of their event.   Myrtle Beach Bike Week® (Harley Week) is before the start of the summer vacation season.

Myrtle Beach Bike Week® (Harley Week)
The #1 complaint by the Myrtle Beach locals is the noise, #2 is the traffic congestion.   With 300,000 + people attending this event, it can get noisy and congested in some areas.    The motorcycle enthusiast attending this event, many do have modified exhaust on their motorcycles.   Control your RPM’S you help control this problem.  The traffic problems for Bike Week, is no where near as bad as from Memorial Day to Labor Day.   For decades people have said “The Grand Strand” needs more roads.  I have experienced the traffic for many years during Bike Week and during the summer, and I much prefer the Bike Week traffic over the summer traffic.

Now the City of Myrtle Beach wants to end the Bike Rallies as they put it, hoping to get rid of the Atlantic Beach Bike Fest or (BBW)    The North Myrtle Beach area Chamber of Commerce just did a survey with the businesses that are members.   The results showed the businesses want Myrtle Beach Bike Week® (Harley Week) to continue but do not want the Atlantic Beach Bike Fest.

To get a true survey there should be TWO (2) completely separate surveys.   The survey should be asked the same questions for each event.   Myrtle Beach Bike Week® (Harley Week) Survey.   Atlantic Beach Bike Fest or (BBW)  Survey.   These are two totally different events and should be surveyed and discussed as such.

There is a lot of problems associated with this Memorial Day Event that are not the problems of Myrtle Beach Bike Week® (Harley Week).   People are telling the City Council and Myrtle Beach these are two separate events and should be discussed and issues resolved separately, but no one elected is listening   These events have different problems and the first step in resolving the problems should be to address as separate events.   Work with the all the promoters and businesses not just a select one or two of the different events, get everyone’s input, discuss the real issues and work toward a mutual resolution.

The City of Myrtle Beach says it will not issue vendor permits for the Bike weeks in 2009.    This effort will have minimal impact.  The events currently are outside the city limits of Myrtle Beach.  The city already has an ordinance that prohibits vendors and special permits from being issued throughout much of Myrtle Beach, but the OZ-50 zones - including Broadway at the Beach, the Myrtle Beach Convention Center and the NASCAR Cafe - were exempt.   Commissioners gave a thumbs-up to amending zoning rules so no special events can be held during May.  Harley Corporate and the vendors that were there, had already left the Convention Center and all they offered this past year (2008) to the Motorcycle Enthusiasts was trailer parking.

The Myrtle Beach City Council is attempting to dictate their personal agenda, hoping to convince Horry County and the surrounding towns to not issue permits for Bike Week.  No matter what Myrtle Beach does the town of Atlantic Beach has already said the Atlantic Beach Bike Fest (BBW) will go on as planned in 2009.   Surfside Beach has put a two (2) year moratorium on issuing vending permits.  Surfside Beach reported they issued only 5 permits for the 2008 Bike Week.     Horry County relies heavily on revenue from vendor permits to finance public safety operations.   At current (2008) vendor fees Horry County will loose almost 500,000.00 if they do not issue permits.

The City of Myrtle Beach has been miss-informed again if they believe people come to Bike Week just for the vendors.  You can buy on-line what the vendors and stores have at Bike Week.

The current dates for Myrtle Beach Bike Week® (Harley Week) is May 8-17, 2009.

Myrtle Beach Bike Week® (Harley Week) is the third largest event in the US with coverage nation wide and particularly on the East Coast.   The negative from the City Council of Myrtle Beach on the Bike Weeks, will only support in promotions and increase the attendance of the Bike Weeks in 2009.
Councilwoman Susan Grissom Means said she's "100 percent in favor" of ending the rallies - neither of which is sponsored by the city - but wants residents to "support this with your mouths and with your pocketbooks."

The City of Myrtle Beach does not own Myrtle Beach Bike Week®, Harley Week, or any of the events during this week.  Nor do they own Atlantic Beach Bike Fest.   The City of Myrtle Beach does not promote or advertise this event, -0- Dollars in marketing this event that I am aware of.    Myrtle Beach Bike Week®, (Harley Week) has never been promoted on the city web site, but they did promote and advertise Atlantic Beach Bike Fest on their web site till this year.   The City of Myrtle Beach reaps the benefits and everyone else’s promotions and hard work, and they refuse to recognize we are a separate event from the Atlantic Beach Bike Fest.    I believe the rest of this great country and probably the world sees the difference, but not the Myrtle Beach City Council.   Atlantic Beach Officials have already announced that they have no plans to discontinue their event for 2009.   Myrtle Beach City Council is raising the taxes One Million dollars to find ways to get rid of the Motorcycle Enthusiasts (Bikers).

The Fact is, the City nor the County cannot stop anyone from coming to the beach for Bike Week or any other time of the year.   The Grand Strand is open to the public and so are the Beaches and the roads of the Grand Strand which includes Myrtle Beach.  Many of the Motorcycle Enthusiasts attending Myrtle Beach Bike Week® (Harley Week), return to vacation during the Summer, Fall and Winter.   Does Myrtle Beach, the surrounding cities and the County want to lose this business also?   Myrtle Beach Bike Week® (Harley Week) is one of the best Rallies in the US.   We have great weather in May, a beautiful beach, great attractions, some of the finest lodging facilities in the country, and the prices are reasonable year round to vacation at The Grand Strand.

The City Council doesn’t need to squander tax payers dollars trying to halt the event that many local businesses rely on to pay the bills and taxes, especially during these difficult economic times.   They should spend the One Million Dollars helping to promote this event.   It's not simply the motorcycle-related industries that profit; restaurants, bars, hotels, grocery stores, retail outlets plus many others benefit.   The trickle-down effect of Myrtle Beach Bike Week® (Harley Week) cannot be underestimated.  Many of your local businesses can’t wait for the motorcycle events that usher in the summer months and much-needed revenue.

See you Bike Week

Councilmembers said they hope to see a concerted effort among everyone who's affected -- hoteliers, merchants and the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce -- because they will all play their parts in replacing bike-rally visitors with other types of tourists.

"We're going to have to displace them with the tourists we want," Councilman Chuck Martino said at Tuesday's workshop discussion. "Then when the bikers want to come, the hotel rooms are already full.

"But if we don't replace them, I don't think three mills is going to make up for the lost revenue."
